can t work word 2003 file

When I open up a word 2003, I get an error messge that the file is locked.
File was transfer from Windows XP machine.
why do I get this locked message?

Have you check the properties of the file to see if it is set to Read Only? I had to remote the machine to get the file to work.

Also, try right clicking on the file, select Properties, then click the "Unlock" button there - this appears when a file has been moved from another computer and opened on another. Depends on security, but it's there for me.
